Is Potty Training your Adult Dog Really Impossible?

By: Jeremy C.W

Like the saying goes, “You cannot teach an old dog new tricks”! Most dog owners might agree with this. However, if your adult dog is still not potty trained and keeps doing it at the wrong place at the wrong time, do not loose hope. With a little patience and love, you can effectively potty train your adult dog as well. Just remember, it is never too late to teach your pet to do the right thing.

Although Potty Training is a difficult chore, dogs are probably the easiest animal to train. Puppies are even easier to train compared to adult dog. This implies that while potty training your adult dog, you need to be a bit more patient and commitment, as old habits die-hard. You will need to give your adult dog more time to grasp and retain his actions.

So how do you keep a close eye on your dog at all times to ensure that he doesn’t urinate all over the house?

A leash can be used to restrict your dog’s body timing and movement inside the house. Create a nice small place for your dog to play with the whole family. Your dog won’t be able to make his move, because he knows that you know his path.

Now, Let’s us look at a few useful tips that will help you adult dog become potty-trained.

Firstly, give you dog limited water to drink to prevent dehydration. Your pet’s last meal should be between at seven and eight to ensure that he does not urinate or defecate during your sleeping hours.

Secondly, try to recognise the signs of when your dog’s needs to go. At such times, your dog will typically start sniffing and scratching something, or get restless and acts distracted. This will make it much easier to potty train your adult dog.

Thirdly, set up a designated area for your pet to urinate and defecate. Go out on morning walks with your dog and do play with him unless he completes his morning chores. Remember to praise your pet for doing it at the right place.

Potty training your dog may take time, but reaping its reward will certainly be worth the while. Give your pet some time to learn, with patience and commitment comes great success!
